What is a School Counselor?

For Students

A trusted person who helps identify barriers impeding on academic, social/emotional, and future career success. This is done in part by:

1.     Classroom Lessons

2.     Small Group Counseling

3.     Individual Counseling

A trusted person who genuinely listens on a wide range of topics, such as: peer/friend conflicts, bullying, academics, career preparation, addictions, suicide, divorce, grief, anger, coping skills ect. Maintaining confidentiality is key! ***Unless: harm to self, harm by others, harm to others***

For Parents/Guardians

To help provide short-term counseling services for your students, in order to assist in academic, social/emotional, and future career success. To assist with various family needs, such as: referrals, sharing community resources, assisting with food/shelter/ clothing needs, and/or advocating for the student's safety/best interest. The school counselor is here to help families navigate the journey of raising a child to be successful; therefore I titled my website: Miracle Growing Minds. As a team, we can work together to help your student grow to reach the best level of success for her/him.

For the Community

A partner to help connect students, families, and the school with various community services/resource. To be a connection between the school district and various community needs. This can be done by building connections with various community leaders, involvement in community events, and/or collaborating with members of the community to assess the needs of students and families.

For Teachers

A trusted colleague to collaborate with, assist in classroom success, and/or a resource for the social/emotional needs of students. The school counselor is also here for each teacher's mental and personal wellness. This might look like stopping in the school counseling office to chat, sitting down together at lunch, or having the school counselor stop by your class to observe.

For Administrators

To assist in collecting schoolwide data that will allow for best practices and the most effective school environment for all students and staff. To provide an evidenced based comprehensive school counseling program. The school counselor should be included on important administrative meetings, in order to ensure the social/emotional aspect of school environment is being considered, along with ensuring barriers to student success are being identified.

For the District

To further provide objective data driven services to all students within the school. This is done by using best practices and informed decision making skills, in order to ensure ethical and legal considerations while serving all students. As the school counselor, I am a member of the American School Counseling Association, which provides professional accountability and guidance, to ensure the aforementioned responsibilities to the district.
